Dakota City Fire Department to Hold Bells Across America Service in Remembrance of Fallen Firefighters

Dakota City, NE – On Sunday, May 7, 2023, the Dakota City Fire Department will hold a Bells Across America service to remember fallen firefighters. The service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Dakota City Fire Hall, located at 208 S. 21^st Street in Dakota City, Nebraska. The public is welcome to attend.
The Dakota City service is held as part of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend held in Emmitsburg, Maryland each year. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has requested that on May 7, 2023 local communities, fire departments, and religious organizations pause to remember firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2022 and in previous years. The service held in Dakota City is one of many bell ringing ceremonies scheduled to take place across the United States.
During the ceremony, the Dakota City Fire Department will pay tribute to fallen firefighters from across the nation, including the Department’s three fallen members: Captain Andy Zalme, Captain Eric Speck, and Firefighter Lowell Satterwhite. Zalme was recognized at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in October 2016, Speck and Satterwhite were recognized in October 2017. Members of the Fire Department and the Zalme, Speck, and Satterwhite families traveled to Emmitsburg in 2016 and 2017.
“Bells Across America is a way to honor the firefighters who passed away in 2022,” said Clint Rasmussen, Dakota City Fire Chief. “It is also a way to honor and remember Dakota City’s three fallen firefighters, Andy, Eric, and Lowell. These firefighters paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving their communities.”
