Nature of Work: This is skilled electrical work at the Contractor’s License level, installing, repairing and maintaining electrical and communication wiring, electrical fixtures, equipment and systems in campus buildings and dormitories. Performs varied tasks such as inspecting, maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) electrical units and analyzing and remedying electrical problems within campus building and dormitory lighting, security and power systems. Work also includes repairing and maintaining electrical appliances and fixtures, electric motors, fire alarm systems, sound systems and controls and estimating job costs for specific projects. An employee within this classification uses independent judgement and professional expertise in determining work methods, work materials and required equipment. General supervision is received from an administrative superior with work reviewed in the form of reports, results achieved and adherence to local, State and Federal electrical codes. Leadership may be exercised over other electrical personnel.
Examples of Work Performed:
• Perform the following tasks at the beginning of the work shift, before/after all breaks, at the end of the work shift, and frequently throughout the work shift; check/respond to email and submit/update scheduled FacilityOne tasks.
• Ability to learn, and use computerized technology to communicate, monitor campus systems, and record keeping per department procedures.
• Complete work orders and preventative maintenance tasks as assigned. Maintain communication with the requestor throughout completion of the assigned work order and log required data into FacilityOne.
• Order materials within the electrical department through vendors/suppliers, and research warranty issues.
• Work to keep inventory at demand levels, including fixtures and maintenance supplies.
• The ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical data; including plans, specifications, and manufacturer design sheets.
• Monitor and work to maintain shop cleanliness and that it is up to standards.
• Ability to display leadership, composure, and decisiveness in dealing with assigned tasks and the campus community without direction or supervision.
• Conduct new employee orientation to department responsibilities
• Monitor work schedules, providing the preliminary acceptance for all leave requests by department personnel.
• Knowledge of safety hazards and appropriate precautionary methods involved in building maintenance, repair and construction activities.
• Ability to analyze and find remedies to electrical problems within campus building and dormitory lighting, security and power systems.
• Prepare electrical estimates for small projects on campus including materials, equipment and personnel costs.
• Ability to inspects, repair and maintain HVAC electrical units and systems.
• Perform repairs to electrical appliances, electric motors, fixtures, fire alarm systems, sound systems and controls.
• Install conduit, power conductors, switches, receptacles, light fixtures and related electrical items including repairs.
• Ability to use a utility locator and perform locates on campus per requests from digger’s hotline, contractors and/or campus maintenance personal.
• Read and interpret City, State and Federal electrical codes. Ensure adherence of facility and professional safety rules and regulations.
• Ability to operate and maintain public address systems and equipment for campus special events and athletic competitions.
• Leadership and training of co-workers and student employees.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with the public, contractors, staff, and students.
• Support graduation ceremonies and other special events.
• Snow removal as needed.
Required Qualifications: Graduation from a Senior High School or equivalent supplemented by coursework in electronics or electrical repair and three years experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical systems including supervisory experience or any combination of skills, knowledge and abilities that meet these requirements. Possession of a valid State of Nebraska Contractor’s Electrician License.
